Split a receipt by item
Add the receipt line by line or scan it, tick who had each item, and Fairpiece works out every share to the cent. Tax, tips and service charges are lines you split like any other.
How to split a receipt in Fairpiece
- Start a bill and add the people. They are just names, and nobody needs an account.
- Add the receipt and choose who paid it. Type in each line, or scan a photo with Pro.
- Tick who had what. A new item is for everyone, so untick the people who skipped it.
- Send the link. Everyone opens it in a browser, finds their name and sees what they owe and to whom.
Scan the receipt with AI (Pro)
With Pro, take a photo of the receipt and the items and prices fill in by themselves. A long supermarket receipt takes seconds, not ten minutes of typing.
- Any language and currency. Names stay as printed.
- The sum is checked against the printed total.
- Every line stays editable, and the photo stays with the receipt.
Pro is $2.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $49.99 once. Without Pro you type the lines in, and everything else works the same. Compare the plans.
Tax, tips, service and discounts
Tax added at the end, a service charge or a printed tip is a line of its own. Like any line, it is split equally between the people ticked on it, which is everyone by default. Untick anyone who should not share it.
Tax already included in the prices is not a separate line. Splitting the items splits that tax too.
For a discount, type the price you actually paid for the item. When you scan, a discount line is added to the item above it, so the item comes in at its discounted price.
Want the tip in proportion to what each person ordered? The guide shows how to work it out.
Where the leftover cents go
$10.00 split three ways is $3.33 each with one cent left over. Fairpiece gives that cent to the person who paid the receipt if they had the item, and otherwise to the others in the order they appear in the bill: $3.34, $3.33 and $3.33. The shares always add up to the receipt.
Prefer whole numbers? Turn on “Round off cents” for a receipt. Each share is rounded to whole units, so $33.33 becomes $33 and $66.67 becomes $67, and the payer covers the difference.
Several receipts, several payers
A trip or a long evening often has more than one receipt. Keep them all in one bill and give each receipt its own payer. Everyone sees what they owe each payer, separately.
Questions
Can I scan a receipt and split it?
Yes, with Pro. Take a photo and the items and prices fill in. Check the result, tick who had what and send the link.
Can I split a receipt for free?
Yes. Typing in the lines, ticking who had what and the shares are free. Share the link or the PDF: free after a short video, instant with Pro.
How is tax split?
Tax added on top of the prices is its own line, split equally between the people ticked on it. Tax already included in the prices needs no extra line.
What if only two people shared a dish?
Tick just those two. The dish is split between them, and nobody else pays for it.
What about two pizzas on one line?
Keep it as one line with its total price, like Pizza ×2 for $34.00, and tick everyone who shared it. If two people each had their own pizza, add two lines instead.
